Why do Australia and New Zealand need foreign doctors?

The are several issues creating this situation. A mal-distribution in the medical workforce exists throughout Australia and New Zealand. More specifically, there are too many doctors in the biggest cities and not enough in mid-sized and smaller communities. In many fields demand was underestimated and training programs were reduced causing specialty-specific shortages. In others, demand in certain fields has escalated so rapidly that training facilities have not been able to keep up.

Doctors with training and experience from acknowledged countries, who are in good standing, will generally be accepted. Specialists must be either Medical Board Certified or Fellows of their respective specialist college. Family and general practitioners are not required to be Fellows or Members of the their respective college.

To begin the criterion process, provide us with your Curriculum Vitae and a carefully completed application form. While we contact your references, we'll request that you provide notarized copies of your medical diplomas and training credentials. You'll also need to obtain and lodge a certificate of good standing (COGS) from all of the bodies with which you are registered to practice medicine. Please note that this certificate must have been issued within the past ninety days prior to the assessment of your medical documentation in order to be considered valid.

Why would I want to work in these locations?

Many of the opportunities are in very appealing cities that have grown and require additional medical support. Most of the communities requiring specialists are coastal cities with populations ranging from fifteen thousand to a million people. The communities requiring family and general practitioners tend to be in regional areas of 2,000 to 25,000 people. Over the years we have provided assistance to coastal resort towns, major metropolitan cities, mid-sized cities, farming and mining towns.

What is the duration of the appointments?

Most employers are looking for staff who are willing to commit to working overseas for one to two years or longer. Some employers will accept candidates who are available for as short as six months and others will not. It generally seems to take six weeks to understand Australian or New Zealand medicine and about three months to become completely comfortable. As a result, longer (more than six months) assignments are preferred from the perspective of the practices and hospitals in need of assistance.

What are the working hours?

We find that the average working week ranges from thirty eight to fifty hours. Considerably less than most countries. Prior to accepting a position we will provide you with a position description, overview of the practice and arrange a teleconference for you to speak with management and a doctor from the practice. This will give you an overview of the work environment, practice responsibilities and lifestyle.
